Reading India's numbers

India is the second-largest country in the atlas after the United States, with 308 facilities run by 92 operators. The base is spread over 55 cities but leans heavily on one region. The Mumbai metropolitan region, which here joins Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, holds 92 facilities, 30% of the national total, and 2,401 MW of published capacity. After it come Chennai (34), Delhi NCR (32), Bengaluru (24), Hyderabad (21), Pune (16).

Counting megawatts rather than buildings changes the picture. Only 88 of India's 255 operating facilities publish a capacity, together 1,581 MW. Many of the rest are carrier and exchange sites: the 11 National Internet Exchange of India nodes in the table, for example, state no power figure at all. Projects under construction publish 2,537 MW and announced ones 3,771 MW, so the published pipeline is about 4.0 times the published operating base. The median Indian project under construction states 49 MW; the median operating site that publishes a number states 10 MW.

From Mumbai to Hyderabad and Vizag

New capacity is not landing where the old capacity sits. Hyderabad has fewer facilities than Chennai but the largest published capacity of any Indian city, 2,027 MW, carried by 3 projects of 200 MW or more: HyperVault Future City Campus (1,000 MW), AdaniConneX Hyderabad (600 MW), AirTrunk HYD1 (243 MW). Visakhapatnam on the east coast appears only once in the catalogue, yet that single record, Colt DCS / RMZ Visakhapatnam Digital Campus, is the largest published project in the country at 1,250 MW. The two largest of these, the HyperVault and Visakhapatnam campuses, are announced rather than under construction, and phased campuses of this size usually take several years to reach full load.

One correction is applied on this page: the source catalogue listed TCS's HyperVault campus in Hyderabad twice, citing the same press release and the same 1,000 MW. The atlas counts it once, which is why India's announced total here is 3,771 MW rather than 1,000 MW higher.

Who is building

By number of sites the market is led by colocation specialists: ST Telemedia's Indian business has 34 facilities and 635 MW published, Nxtra Data 24, and NTT 20. The pipeline belongs to a different kind of player. AdaniConneX has just 5 records, but 2,033 MW of published capacity, more than any other operator in India. 3 Indian projects publish 1 GW or more, and 2 of them come from groups that belong to the Adani and Tata conglomerates.

Power and policy

The national average business electricity price in the atlas's power dataset is $0.109 per kWh, but tariffs are set by state. Maharashtra, home to the Mumbai cluster, has cut high-tension industrial rates and reclassified data centers as industrial consumers, and Tamil Nadu's industrial tariff rose only modestly this year, so both main hubs sit at or below that average. State policy is the main incentive layer: Uttar Pradesh, which includes Noida and Greater Noida, offers a ten-year electricity duty exemption and capital subsidies under its 2026 data centre policy, and Tamil Nadu exempts data centres from electricity tax for five years. At national level, the Union Budget 2026–27 proposes a tax holiday until 2047 for foreign cloud providers serving global customers from Indian data centres; it is listed as proposed, not yet in force. Unlike Malaysia or parts of the United States, India has no data center moratorium or grid-connection cap in the atlas's restrictions dataset.

Electricity price for data centers in India

$0.109 per kWh (range $0.090–$0.140), business tariff. Commercial/industrial tariffs vary widely by state (GlobalPetrolPrices national average, Dec 2025). Maharashtra (MERC) cut HT-industrial rates ~15% for FY2025-26 with further annual declines planned through FY2029-30 and reclassified data centers as industrial consumers; Tamil Nadu's FY2026 industrial tariff rose just 3.16% to ~₹7.5/kWh (~$0.087) — both DC-hub states now sit mid-range or below this average, not above it. Open-access renewables PPAs are common for DCs.
